We support partners around the globe who are working to give all people the same chance to thrive, no matter where they live.

Our work depends on grantees and partners across the United States and in more than 100 countries who have on-the-ground expertise, a deep understanding of the issues we care about, and strong ties with the communities in which we aim to make a difference. At the same time, we have learned the value of having foundation representatives based in key regions—to help us build relationships with partner organizations and governments, better understand the policy environment, and remain culturally sensitive. In addition to our Seattle headquarters, we have offices in Washington, D.C.; London; New Delhi, India; Beijing, China; Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Johannesburg, South Africa; and Abuja, Nigeria.

Washington, D.C.

The foundation’s Washington, D.C., office leads our government relations efforts in the United States, Canada, and the Asia-Pacific region and includes communications and legal staff. It also serves as a base for programs that focus on the eastern United States.

Europe

Our Europe team, based in the London office, supports the foundation’s policy, advocacy, and communications activities in Europe. The team works with grantees and partners, builds and sustains European donor support, and fosters political commitment in Europe to advance global health and development goals.

Middle East

Our Middle East team, based in the London office, works with governments, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), universities, and philanthropists in the Middle East and North Africa to support the region’s expanding role as a development partner.

Africa

We invest in efforts throughout Sub-Saharan Africa to improve health and help smallholder farmers lift themselves out of poverty. Our main Africa office is in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and we have representatives based in Johannesburg, South Africa; and Abuja, Nigeria who oversee our initiatives in those countries.

India

Our New Delhi office oversees the foundation’s work in India, which includes partnerships with the central and state governments, NGOs, and the private sector. We began our work in India a decade ago with an HIV-prevention initiative. Since then, our work has expanded to include a wide range of programs in health, agricultural development, sanitation, and financial services.

China

Our office in Beijing supports China’s expanding role as a development partner for the rest of the world—particularly Sub-Saharan Africa—and helps China address domestic health and development priorities, including tobacco control, tuberculosis, HIV, and charitable sector support.
